The source hierarchy has changed
Search strategy has traditionally treated community platforms as distribution channels and publisher sites as authority. The observed citation pattern reverses that hierarchy. Reddit appears in about 15% of the answers in this study, followed by YouTube at 12% and LinkedIn at about 4.7%.
Forbes is the first traditional publisher in the ranking, appearing in about 4.2% of answers. Wikipedia, long treated as a default machine-readable reference, ranks seventh at about 3.1%.
Why this matters for brands
A brand’s own website is only one surface from which an answer engine can assemble a recommendation. The sources that carry discussions, demonstrations, and practitioner experience now occupy a large share of the citation layer.
That does not make synthetic community activity a viable shortcut. It raises the value of accurate participation, documentation that creators can reference, and original evidence that gives real communities something useful to discuss.
What the ranking does not prove
Citation frequency is not the same as persuasion, trust, or downstream conversion. A source can be cited in support of a narrow fact without shaping the final recommendation. The cohort also reflects the prompts and industries represented in AthenaHQ’s customer base.
The result should be read as a map of observed source behavior, not a universal ranking of website quality.
